The Quarry

Which One Is Better?

The Quarry and Until Dawn are both remarkable horror games, Until Dawn being one of the quinessential slasher games that was a setting stone for multiple choice games, with the Quarry being it's biggest spiritual-successor, having and incredible storyline and capitaving setting. Both games are amazing, don't get me wrong, but which is better?

I will be reviewing both games and using these categories:

  • Characters
  • Plot
  • Fear Factor/The Monster
  • Setting
  • Gameplay
  • Ending
  • By the way I won't be reviewing the remake version of Until Dawn, only the original version.

    Characters

    The Quarry

In the Quarry, it felt as if the characters had complexity weren't just a slasher stereotype. The characters had depth and you could feel a connection with them, especially with Dylan and Laura. But, in this game you don't really get to meet them as much as much as you meet the characters in Until Dawn (Except Jess, poor girl had no screentime/gameplay). Nick barely has any gameplay, considering he had plot armour and HAS to become a werewolf, and we don't get to see Abi often.

    Until Dawn

In Until Dawn the characters are based more off of Slasher Stereotypes. Don't get me wrong, the characters are all iconic (Except Ashley, freaking hate her) and have their moments (I love you Josh Washington), but it's obvious we don't really get to know them unlike the characters in The Quarry. All characters have flaws and are morally gray, which actually something I like. You start off hating them in the begining, but you slowly gain a connections with he characters as the game goes on.

So, Which One Has Better Characters?

As much as I love every character in Until Dawn (except Ashley), The Quarry takes the win for this one. All their characters are unique and don't follow a stereotype. This game also really breaks boundaries with characters, and the way they interact is really interesting. Especially Laura and Travis Hackett, Laura first despised Travis (ofcourse) because he arrested her and Max, but we later end up having a choice to work with Travis if we follow the right path in the game.

    Plot

    The Quarry

The Quarry's plot has more to it rather than 'it's a monster and we need to all escape!!'. Werewolves didn't spawn out of nowhere in Hackett's Quarry; there is a interesting explenation to it. Plus, the storyline with Max and Laura really add to this game. It's not just a slasher, it has some really good plot twists and it has a unique plot. Though the one thing I dislike about this game's plot is the plot armour. This game definetly has a lot of plot armour, for example Nick has to turned into a werewolf. You can't really save nick.

    Until Dawn

This game has a plot which is existant in most horror movies and takes a cheesy slasher route. Obviously, this route very much works well with the game, it makes the game iconic and enjoyable amongst any horror fan. But there was still more complexity to this. This game has an interesting backstory for the Wendigos and how they came to be (miners that used to work on Blackwood Mountain suffered from starvation after they got trapped in a cave, then they got possesed by the Wendigo spirit). Plus, Blackwood Mountain, has a richer history than Hackett's Quarry.

So Which Game Has A Better Plot?

Both games have amazing plots, so I'm gonna say this is a tie. Both plots are enjoyable and it's obvious the writing team put effort into both of them.

    Fear factor/The Monster

I put these two together because the Monster in these games are usually one of the reasons why the game is scary.

    The Quarry

The design for the werewolves...they were disasterous. At first, I did not even realise they were werewolves and I thought they were some mythical creature that I've never heard of and they wuld probably explain about later. Nope, turned out they were normal werewolves! These werewolves were not scary, neither was the game. The game is amazing, don't get me wrong, but the game was only spooky. Not scary. I think this was an intention though, so I'm not gonna play too much into it. It's still a great game, It's just not your typical horror game where they throw jumpscares at you. It's very much laidback and it only tries to be spooky. It's not that gory asw (Except when Constance gets shot with the rifle and Ryan gets his face crushed). Also, they could have done so much with this game when it came to the Werewolf though.

Like, seriously? Did no one question this design during the making of the game?

    Until Dawn

Until Dawn is a terrifying game. It's gory deaths and the scary setting and ambience really intensifies the tension and anxiety the player has throughout the game. The monster itself if horrifying. I mean, imagine this outside your window at night:

There is nothing more to add. This game...it's scary.

    So which one is scarier?

    Until Dawn. Period.

    Setting

    The Quarry

Hackett's Quarry: it is geniunely an amazing setting. The setting gave pure 80s slasher vibes. A summercamp? In the woods? Sign me up.

    Until Dawn

This environment is definetly not friendly. The game taking place in winter makes the setting even more harsher. The entire game has the iconic colour grading we know Until Dawn for; The iconic shade of blue being prevelent in most of the game.

    Which setting was better?

Until Dawn! It's just better and more scary, and the art directors of the game really knew how to make it scary. The Quarry's environment is more friendly though, and it's not scary at all at night.

    Gameplay

    The Quarry

The Quarry's gameplay mechanics are a tad bit similar to Until Dawn, but I'll have to say the dialogue and stealth mechanics are not good. To stay stealthy when you're hiding from the werewolves in the game, you have to press X and hold on to it until the enemy is gone in this game. Once they're gone, then you relase it. It's not a good mechanic. And whenever you choose to say a dialogue, a message pops up in the corner saying that 'this (character) did not like/not like' what you said or something similar to that, even though it does not effect most of the gameplay.

    Until Dawn

The Hold Still mechanic in the game is one of the most iconic things in the entire game. Escpecially during the climax chase scene with Sam and Mike trying to find a way to kill the Wendingos, it was iconic. I know I use iconic for the game a lot, but it truely is. The way you interact with characters in this game actually effect the fate of the characters. For example, if Chris decides to kill Ashley in either the chainsaw scene or the scene where he has to shoot either himself or Ashley, Ashley will later on close the door on Chris when the wendigo catches up with him when he decides to go back and check up on Josh. This results in his death. There are many instances like this in the game, such as Emily treating Matt differently if their relationship bar is high or Jess being more honest with Mike if he's being honest with her. The character's relationships actually have an effect onf them.

    Which game has better gameplay?

None other than Until Dawn. It's gameplay really is amazing. It's emerisive and puts the players on edge. That's what's so iconic about it.

    Ending

    The Quarry

The ending for this game is boring and so anti-climatic. "Ryan survived" "Dylan survived". The way they kill Silas is also soooooooo anticlimatic. You set up this whole story, just to not have an epic werewolf showdown at the end? Not cool. And the podcast segment isn't even good. They don't even really talk about Hackett's Quarry. It's just plain disapointing.

    Until Dawn

This game, as I said multiple times, IT IS ICONIC!!! The end cutscenes in the police station, the climax with the wendigos in the lodge, man is it the most climatic thing (compared to The Quarry). The ending is really good. One of my favourite moments in the ending cutscenes is when Sam says 'I thought we had a special connection' about her and Josh. IM SOBBING.

    Which has the better ending

UNTIL DAWN!!! Until Dawn's ending is amazing. It's also fun to see the police station recordings at the end. It's fun.

    Who won?

    DRUMROLL PLEASE...

    UNTIL DAWN

I've used iconic to describe Until Dawn 9 times...well ITS CUS IT IS ALRIGHT. I love this game. As much as The Quarry is also amazing in it's own ways, Until Dawn makes u feel so much more immersed in it's environment and has players hooked on to the story. When they say butterfly effect is promninant in this game, it really is, so you really have to think before you things. Missing one QTE can either risk or someone else to danger.
